Perspective and Colors

Artists use perspective and color to trick your eye, to convincingly translate our 3-D world onto the 2-D surface of canvas and paper.

Perspective: an object closest to you - anything in the foreground - a rock even —  is rendered by the artist larger and more vividly than the mountains in the distance, thus confounding what you know about the world in contrast to how you literally see it.

Color: tonal values and color serve to complete the illusion. Without the dark tones of the foreground or the pastel tones of the distance you lack the experience of perspective and depth.

Joanne Thorne Arnold, Bernadette Decker, Carrie Decker and Stacie Flint will bring their view and their interpretation of these elements as part of this exhibition.

Joanne Thorne Arnold

For Joanne Thorne Arnold, it is the exploration of colors through familiar landscapes. Joanne Thorne Arnold is an oil painter who specializes in color. For 40 years her canvases have portrayed everything from the figurative to the abstract. After graduating from the State University of New York, College at New Paltz in 1984, real life education as an artist began.

Bernadette Decker

Bernadette Decker Grew up in the beautiful Hudson Valley. She has traveled

extensively to the shores of Cape Cod, Cape May and to the Outer Banks, North Carolina. “The elements of nature differ there from the banks of the Hudson River. Capturing the tranquility of sounds and sights of the south, promotes my visions of crafting to become alive! Working early in my career in stained glass in an organic style, I enjoyed the way the sun flecks off the leaded cut-glass. I have dabbled in organic soap products, doggie biscuits, flower arranging and crafted sewing projects that sold at local artisan events in the Poughkeepsie area. These featured photographs are a result of my journey south as I brought back home to have a little bit of shoreline in my presence.”

Carrie Decker

Carrie Decker was born in Poughkeepsie, NY and raised in the Hudson Valley. She earned by Bachelors in Art History at SUNY New Paltz. After moving to the New England area and working in technology, she continued to volunteer in several Museums. Relocating back to the city of Poughkeepsie, she started Crazy Over ART on tour; a non-profit art mobile that brings art to communities with limited access in the creative field. “The pandemic has given me many opportunities to work with a variety of newly found artists and network with seasoned artists. I am creative first and an artist second. I continue to explore new avenues of mediums that surprise me! I have been in several shows in New England and in New York. In my art, I capture genre in interesting objects and familiar places. Different mediums let me explore new chapters of creativity.”

Stacie Flint

Stacie Flint’s expressive acrylics use imagery from life, imagination and reference photos and she playfully reinvents them.  The paintings are honest, soulful, inspirational, fun, active, animated, balanced, harmonious, and relatable.  She loves sharing them and hopes they bring joy.

“Every day subjects in life interest me with their simplicity and presence, and thus, their joy.  These works are representative of my vibrantly expressive explorations of everyday subjects."
