Juror of Selection: Maureen Gates and Onaje Benjamin

Being of African American and Caribbean descent and raised in Harlem provided a rich cultural foundation for Onaje Benjamin to develop his creative vision.

Onaje pursued a career as a community organizer, activist and social worker, earning bachelor's and master’s degrees in liberal arts and social work. He began his photographic work in the 80’s working with film cameras. Career demands required him to suspend his photography for a number of decades, but he returned to photography upon retirement in 2015, a move that required him to tackle a steep learning curve in the world of digital cameras and editing software.

Defining himself as a documentary/humanist photographer, Onaje creates monochromatic representations of the world he interprets through the lens.  Whether capturing the action of a women’s roller derby scrimmage, or professional football game, or the intricate aspects of tattooing, or political protest, Onaje’s photographs reflect the shifting cultural and political landscapes which make up his communities.

Onaje’s work has been exhibited in galleries in the Mid-Hudson Valley, New England and New York City; including a solo show at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum. He has received numerous awards, including the Lelani Claire Award for Outstanding Achievement in Photography, and he has conducted artist talks at the Center for Photography in Woodstock.

Maureen Gates is a seasoned photographer with over forty years of experience. She launched her career at the age of 19 by founding SharpImagesPhotographic.com, while studying art, photography, and business. Maureen has since worked in corporate editorial photography for major clients, including IBM, HGTV, the National Park Service, the Culinary Institute of America, Milea Estate Vineyards, and Unilever, among others. Her work has been published in national and local publications.

At her own studio, she specializes in portraiture, headshots, fine art photography, and product photography for advertising. However, it is the creation of fine art images that truly brings her the most joy. Passionate about alternative photographic processes, Maureen frequently works with Van Dyke, Cyanotype, and Infrared techniques to produce one-of-a-kind works of art. Beyond her own creative practice, Maureen has taught photography workshops for both professional photographers and beginners, helping them refine their skills and cultivate their unique artistic visions. She has also mentored students in her studio, guiding interns as they learn the craft.

Maureen’s experience as a juror includes serving on panels for professional photography competitions across New York State, as well as volunteering her time to judge local camera clubs and student exhibitions in Dutchess and Columbia counties. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the Hudson Valley, including recent shows at W.A.A,M, Gallery 40, Jane Street Gallery, Unison, and the Palmer Gallery at Vassar College. Maureen is an active member of Rhinebeck Fine Art and the Woodstock Artists Association’s Museum (W.A.A.M.).
